Steel vs. Aluminum Order Picker Platforms: Which Is Right for Your Warehouse?

By , Posted in Order Pickers

steel and aluminum order pickersChoosing a steel vs aluminum order picker platform is not as simple as deciding that steel is stronger and aluminum is lighter.

Take a 48″ x 48″ Base Order Picker Platform. The steel version weighs 197 lbs., while the aluminum version weighs 140 lbs. Both have the same listed platform capacity: 1,500 lbs..

That example gets to the real decision. The right material depends on platform weight, rated capacity, how the platform will be moved, how demanding the application is, and the environment where it will work.

How Much Does Platform Weight Matter?

Weight is one of the clearest differences between steel and aluminum. On larger platforms, the difference can be substantial.

Platform SizeSteel WeightAluminum WeightCapacity
36″ x 48″148 lbs.105 lbs.1,500 lbs.
48″ x 48″197 lbs.140 lbs.1,500 lbs.
48″ x 96″395 lbs.280 lbs.1,500 lbs.
60″ x 96″634 lbs.380 lbs.1,500 lbs.

On the 60″ x 96″ Base platform, aluminum reduces the platform’s own weight by 254 lbs.

That matters most when the platform is moved manually. If casters and a push handle are part of the setup, a lighter platform can be easier to reposition after it is lowered to floor level. Our order picker accessories and add-ons include casters, handles, floor locks, and other options that can make floor-level movement part of the workflow.

Platform weight still matters when the platform stays on the truck, however. An attachment affects truck capacity and has to be accounted for in the approved truck-and-attachment configuration.

Does Aluminum Mean Lower Order Picker Platform Capacity?

No. Material alone does not determine order picker platform capacity.

Our listed Base models are rated at 1,500 lbs. in both steel and aluminum. That is why capacity should be compared using the rated platform configuration, not assumptions about the material.

For applications that require more capacity, a 3,000 lbs. capacity add is available on applicable steel and aluminum configurations.

Platform capacity is also separate from the approved capacity of the order picker with the platform and load. Truck configuration, attachment weight, load center, and the load itself all matter.

Before ordering, the truck and platform specifications should be reviewed together. Our Document Center includes Order Picker Platform spec sheets and related literature for that process.

When Does a Steel Order Picker Platform Make Sense?

A steel order picker platform is worth considering when rugged construction is a major priority.

Steel can make sense when the platform will see demanding daily use, the application is hard on equipment, or additional platform weight is less important than durability. It can also be a practical choice when the platform is rarely moved manually at floor level.

For especially demanding applications, material choice is only part of the decision. Our custom Order Picker Platforms can be configured with heavy-duty structural upgrades such as heavier frame construction, tube-style fork pockets, and additional cross supports. A higher-capacity option is a separate configuration decision.

In other words, choosing steel and choosing a heavy-duty build are not the same thing.

When Does an Aluminum Order Picker Platform Make Sense?

An aluminum order picker platform becomes especially attractive when reducing platform weight has operational value.

If the platform is regularly lowered, pushed, repositioned, and returned to the order picker, the difference in weight can matter throughout the shift. The larger the platform, the more noticeable that difference may become.

Aluminum can also be useful when corrosion resistance is an important consideration. That does not make aluminum the automatic choice for every humid or demanding environment; the complete operating conditions still need to be evaluated.

Most importantly, lighter does not mean light-duty. Our standard Base models show why: steel and aluminum versions can carry the same 1,500 lbs. platform rating.

How Do Frequency of Use and the Warehouse Environment Affect the Choice?

Frequency of use matters, but it does not pick the material by itself.

If high-frequency use includes repeated manual movement, lower platform weight becomes more important. If high-frequency use means rough handling and a demanding environment, rugged construction may deserve more emphasis. If the platform stays primarily with the order picker, ease of manual movement may matter less than fit, capacity, and durability.

The warehouse environment matters for the same reason. Consider whether the platform will operate in a dry indoor facility, encounter moisture or humidity, experience frequent impacts, or move between different operating areas.

The best choice comes from asking what the platform will experience every day, not from treating steel or aluminum as universally better.

Steel or Aluminum? Ask These Questions First

QuestionWhy It Matters
What platform capacity is required?Capacity should come from the rated configuration
How large is the platform?Larger sizes can create a greater weight difference
Will it be pushed manually?Lower platform weight may matter more
How often will it be repositioned?Frequent movement increases the value of lower weight
How demanding is the application?Ruggedness and structural design may become priorities
Does corrosion resistance matter? The environment can influence material choice
Is a heavy-duty build needed?Structural upgrades should be considered separately
Which order picker will be used?Truck fit and approved configuration still matter

The Bottom Line: Choose for the Application

There is no universal winner in a steel vs aluminum order picker platform comparison.

Steel may make more sense when rugged construction and demanding use are the priorities. Aluminum may make more sense when lower platform weight, frequent manual movement, or corrosion resistance matters more.

Capacity should never be assumed from material alone. The right choice depends on the platform size, load, order picker, movement through the warehouse, and operating environment.
